How Often Should Eavestroughs Be Cleaned in Guelph?

The standard recommendation for Guelph homes is twice a year — once in late spring (late May to early June) and once in late fall (November, after leaves have dropped). Here's why that schedule works and what can go wrong if you skip it.

Why Late Spring Cleaning Matters

Guelph's maple trees are the biggest culprit for spring eavestrough debris. Maple samaras (the "helicopter" seeds) fall in massive quantities in May, and they pack into eavestrough channels and downspouts densely — more so than autumn leaves in many cases. Left in place, they decompose into a wet mat that blocks water flow and holds moisture against the fascia. The late May / early June window catches this debris before summer storms push significant water through the system.

Why Late Fall Cleaning Matters

Cleaning after leaf fall is critical for winter performance. Blocked eavestroughs in winter cause:

  • Ice dams: When meltwater can't flow through a blocked trough, it backs up under shingles and refreezes, eventually causing interior water damage
  • Ice weight damage: Water-filled eavestroughs freeze solid, creating enormous weight that pulls fasteners out of the fascia
  • Downspout blockages: A blocked downspout that freezes becomes a solid ice column — impossible to clear until spring

When to Clean More Frequently

Some Guelph properties need cleaning more than twice a year:

  • Homes directly under large oaks or silver maples (heavy debris both spring and fall)
  • Properties with pine or spruce trees (needles fall year-round and pack tightly)
  • Homes where birds or squirrels nest in eavestroughs
  • Properties with a history of ice dam formation

Signs Your Eavestroughs Need Cleaning Now

  • Water spilling over the eavestrough edge during rain instead of flowing to downspouts
  • Visible debris, plant growth, or bird nesting material in the trough
  • Downspout not draining during or after rain
  • Staining or erosion in the soil or mulch directly below an eavestrough section
