What Size Eavestrough Does My Guelph Home Need?

Choosing the wrong eavestrough size is a common and expensive mistake — too small and your system overflows in heavy rain, too large and you've overpaid. Here's what actually works for Guelph homes.

The Standard: 5-Inch K-Style Aluminum

The vast majority of Guelph residential installations use 5-inch K-style (ogee profile) aluminum eavestrough with 3×4-inch rectangular downspouts. This combination handles the water volume from most standard residential roof drainages areas in Ontario's precipitation patterns, including Guelph's intense summer thunderstorms.

When to Go to 6-Inch

6-inch K-style eavestrough handles approximately 40% more water volume than 5-inch. It's warranted when:

  • The roof drainage area per downspout exceeds approximately 100 square metres
  • Roof pitch is steep (above 8:12), which accelerates water runoff velocity
  • The home has experienced overflow issues during moderate rainfall with 5-inch troughs
  • Downspout placement options are limited (fewer downspouts means each must handle more volume)

Many two-storey Guelph homes with larger footprints benefit from 6-inch on the lower roofline sections even if 5-inch is appropriate elsewhere.

Half-Round vs. K-Style

Half-round eavestrough (the traditional rounded profile) is less common but used on some heritage and high-end properties in Guelph's older neighbourhoods (downtown, Exhibition Park, The Ward). It carries water efficiently but at a higher installed cost. For most Guelph homes, K-style is the practical and cost-effective choice.

Downspout Sizing and Placement

Downspout placement matters as much as trough size. Rules of thumb for Guelph installations:

  • One downspout per 10–12 metres of eavestrough run maximum
  • Corners that receive drainage from two directions need their own downspout
  • 3×4-inch rectangular downspouts (standard with 5-inch trough) handle typical residential volumes; 4×5-inch pairs with 6-inch trough
  • Downspout extensions should discharge at least 1.5–2 metres from the foundation — a critical detail in Guelph's wet springs
